Indication
Treatment of infections caused by amoxicillin-resistant organisms.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: 375 mg every 8 hours or 625 mg every 8 hours or 1000 mg every 12 hours at meal start.
Special Populations
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Safety in pregnancy not established; excreted in breast milk, caution advised.
Key Drug Interactions
- Probenecid increases amoxicillin levels
- May reduce oral contraceptive efficacy
- Allopurinol increases rash risk
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to penicillins
- History of amoxicillin/clavulanic-associated jaundice
Common side effects
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Skin rashes
- Abdominal pain
Counselling Points
- Take at the start of meals
- Report any allergic reactions
- Use caution with anticoagulants
Serious warnings
- Serious hypersensitivity reactions
- Risk of pseudomembranous colitis
- Monitor organ function during prolonged therapy
