Indication

Treatment of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and intra-abdominal infections.

Dosage (summary)

The usual adult dosage is 400 mg once daily, administered orally, with or without food.

Onset of Action / Duration

Onset of action typically occurs within 1 to 2 hours after administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached in approximately 1 to 2 hours.

Special Populations

  • Elderly patients may require dose adjustment due to renal function.
  • Patients with renal impairment should have their dosage adjusted based on creatinine clearance.
  • Patients with hepatic impairment may require caution and monitoring.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Moxifloxacin should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not recommended during breastfeeding.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum may reduce the absorption of Moxifloxacin.
  • Concurrent use with other QT-prolonging drugs may increase the risk of arrhythmias.
  • Warfarin: Moxifloxacin may enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or any other fluoroquinolone.
  • History of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use.
  • Patients with a history of myasthenia gravis.

Serious warnings

  • May cause serious allergic reactions.
  • Risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
  • Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures.
