Indication

Management of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders, treatment of bipolar disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder.

Dosage (summary)

Initial dose is typically 1 mg orally once daily, may be adjusted based on clinical response, with a maximum dose of 6 mg per day.

Onset of Action / Duration

Effects may be observed within 1 to 2 weeks, with full therapeutic effects potentially taking several weeks.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution is advised during lactation as risperidone is excreted in breast milk.

Key Drug Interactions

• CNS depressants may enhance sedative effects.
• Antihypertensive agents may have additive effects leading to hypotension.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to risperidone or any of its components.
• Severe central nervous system depression.
• Comatose states.
