Indication

Epilepsy, acute mania in bipolar disorder, migraine prophylaxis.

Dosage (summary)

Adults: 600-2600 mg/day in divided doses; Children: 15-40 mg/kg/day.

Special Populations

  • Children under 3 years
  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Contraindicated in pregnancy; effective contraception required for women of childbearing potential.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Increased sedation with phenobarbitone
  • Decreased phenytoin levels
  • Increased zidovudine toxicity

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to valproic acid
  • Active liver disease
  • Porphyria
  • Mitochondrial disorders

  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Nausea
  • Weight gain
  • Increased liver enzymes
