Indication
Second line treatment of acute and chronic bronchial obstruction.
Dosage (summary)
Loading: 6 mg/kg lean body mass IV; Maintenance: 0.4-0.5 mg/kg/hour for non-smokers.
Special Populations
- Elderly
- Hepatic impairment
- Renal impairment
- Congestive cardiac failure
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Safety not established; monitor neonates for apnoea and irritability.
Key Drug Interactions
- Fluvoxamine may increase theophylline levels.
- Smoking increases theophylline clearance.
- Cimetidine may raise theophylline levels.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to aminophylline or xanthines.
- Porphyria.
- Active gastritis or peptic ulcer disease.

- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Tachycardia
- Dizziness
