Up to 10 ml IV infusion or slow injection, max 8 g in 24 hours.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Potentiates digitalis glycosides
  • Incompatible with ceftriaxone

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to calcium chloride
  • Cardiac glycosides
  • Ventricular fibrillation
  • Hypercalcaemia
  • Renal failure

Common side effects

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Tingling
  • Hot flushes

Counselling Points

  • Administer slowly
  • Avoid intramuscular injection
  • Monitor pulse rate

Serious warnings

  • Irritant to tissues
  • Risk of hypotension
  • Monitor serum calcium levels
