    Indication

    Treatment of HIV-1 in adults and children u2265 40 kg.

    Dosage (summary)

    600 mg orally once daily, preferably at bedtime.

    Special Populations

    • Hepatic impairment
    • Renal impairment
    • Elderly patients
    • Children < 40 kg

    Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

    Contraindicated in pregnancy; not recommended during breastfeeding.

    Key Drug Interactions

    • CYP3A4 inducers/inhibitors
    • St. John's Wort
    • Cisapride
    • Midazolam
    • Triazolam

    Contraindications

    • Hypersensitivity to efavirenz
    • Weight < 40 kg
    • Severe hepatic impairment
    • History of liver injury with efavirenz

    Common side effects

    • Rash
    • Dizziness
    • Nausea
    • Headache
    • Fatigue

    Counselling Points

    • Take at bedtime to reduce CNS effects
    • Use barrier contraception
    • Monitor for rash and psychiatric symptoms
