Indication
Indicated for epilepsy and bipolar disorder.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: Start with 25 mg/day, increase as needed; max 500 mg/day. Children: 0.6 mg/kg/day, max 400 mg.
Special Populations
- Elderly
- Hepatic impairment
- Renal impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Use in pregnancy may risk oral clefts; monitor levels. Breastfeeding may expose infants to lamotrigine.
Key Drug Interactions
- Valproate increases lamotrigine levels
- Carbamazepine decreases lamotrigine levels
- Hormonal contraceptives may reduce lamotrigine efficacy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to lamotrigine
- Children under 2 years
Common side effects
- Skin rash
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea
Counselling Points
- Report any rash or flu-like symptoms immediately
- Avoid abrupt withdrawal to prevent seizures
- Monitor mood changes and suicidal thoughts
Serious warnings
- Risk of serious skin reactions
- Suicidal ideation in bipolar patients
- Monitor for hypersensitivity symptoms
