Indication
Short-acting intravenous general anaesthetic.
Dosage (summary)
Induction: 1.5-2.5 mg/kg; Maintenance: 4-12 mg/kg/h.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 30-40 secs, Duration: 4-6 mins.
Special Populations
- Elderly
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
- Cardiac insufficiency
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not established in pregnancy; excreted in breast milk, discard for 24 hours post-administration.
Key Drug Interactions
- Benzodiazepines may prolong effects.
- Concomitant CNS depressants increase sedation.
- Rifampicin may cause hypotension.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to propofol or excipients.
- Allergy to soya or peanut.
- Children under 3 years.
- Sedation in patients under 16 in ICU.
Common side effects
- Hypotension
- Respiratory depression
- Nausea
- Bradycardia
Counselling Points
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours post-administration.
- Do not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours.
- Monitor for signs of hypotension and airway obstruction.
Serious warnings
- Propofol infusion syndrome may occur.
- Monitor for respiratory depression.
- Risk of abuse and dependence.
