Indication

Dosage (summary)

20 mg once daily for duodenal ulcer; 10-40 mg for other indications.

Special Populations

  • Elderly
  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Safety not established; excreted in breast milk.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Clopidogrel
  • Digoxin
  • Nelfinavir
  • Atazanavir

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to omeprazole
  • Concomitant use with nelfinavir or atazanavir

Common side effects

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea

Counselling Points

  • Take in the morning with water
  • Do not chew or crush capsules
  • Report any severe side effects immediately

Serious warnings

  • Risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea
  • Increased risk of bone fractures
  • Hypomagnesaemia
