Indication
Treatment of renal anaemia and prevention of anaemia of prematurity.
Dosage (summary)
Initial: 3 x 20 IU/kg/week (subcutaneous); max: 720 IU/kg/week.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 12-28 hours, Duration: 4-28 hours.
Special Populations
- Renal impairment
- Cancer patients
- Premature infants
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to epoetin beta
- Poorly controlled hypertension
- Recent myocardial infarction or stroke
Common side effects
- Hypertension
- Headache
- Thromboembolic events
Counselling Points
- Monitor haemoglobin and platelets regularly
- Avoid use in pregnancy
- Report any severe headaches or vision changes
Serious warnings
- Increased mortality in cancer patients
- Monitor blood pressure
- Risk of Pure Red Cell Aplasia
