Indication

Management of moderate to moderately severe pain.

Dosage (summary)

Adults: 50 mg initially, then 50-100 mg every 4-6 hours. Max 400 mg/day.

Onset of Action / Duration

Onset: 30 mins, Duration: 5-7 hours

Special Populations

  • Elderly
  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding; may cause withdrawal symptoms in newborns.

Key Drug Interactions

  • MAO inhibitors
  • Centrally depressant medicines
  • Carbamazepine
  • SSRIs
  • Warfarin

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to tramadol
  • Acute intoxication with CNS depressants
  • Epilepsy
  • Respiratory depression
  • Increased intracranial pressure

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Somnolence
  • Fatigue

Counselling Points

  • Take with sufficient liquid
  • Do not exceed prescribed dose
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Monitor for signs of respiratory depression
