Indication

Monotherapy or add-on treatment for epilepsy and bipolar disorder.

Dosage (summary)

Adults: Start 25 mg daily, increase to 100-200 mg/day. Children: 0.6 mg/kg/day, max 400 mg.

Special Populations

  • Elderly
  • Hepatic impairment
  • Renal impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Use in pregnancy only if necessary; monitor levels. Caution in breastfeeding.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Valproate increases lamotrigine levels
  • Carbamazepine decreases lamotrigine levels
  • Hormonal contraceptives may reduce efficacy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to lamotrigine

Common side effects

  • Rash
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Headache

  • Monitor for rash and flu-like symptoms
