Indication
Induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia; sedation of ventilated adult patients.
Dosage (summary)
Induction: 1.5-2.5 mg/kg; Maintenance: 4-12 mg/kg/h.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 30 secs, Duration: varies with infusion rate.
Special Populations
- Elderly patients
- Patients with cardiac insufficiency
- Patients with renal impairment
- Patients with hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Contraindicated in pregnancy; avoid breastfeeding for 24 hours post-administration.
Key Drug Interactions
- CNS depressants (e.g., benzodiazepines, opioids)
- Rifampicin (may cause hypotension)
- Valproate (may require dose reduction)
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to propofol or excipients
- Children < 3 years
- Sedation in children with croup or epiglottitis
Common side effects
- Hypotension
- Transient apnoea
- Nausea and vomiting
- Bradycardia
Counselling Points
- Avoid skilled tasks for 24 hours post-administration
- Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours
- Monitor for signs of respiratory depression
Serious warnings
- Risk of respiratory depression
- Propofol infusion syndrome
- Anaphylactic reactions possible
