    Indication

    Treatment of generalized and partial epilepsy, and manic episodes in bipolar disorder.

    Dosage (summary)

    Start at 600 mg/day, increase by 5-10 mg/kg/week; max 2500 mg/day.

    Special Populations

    • Renal impairment
    • Elderly patients

    Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

    High teratogenic risk; contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.

    Key Drug Interactions

    • Increased sedation with phenobarbital
    • Decreased efficacy with carbapenems
    • Increased toxicity with zidovudine

    Contraindications

    • Hypersensitivity to sodium valproate
    • Pregnancy
    • Active liver disease

    Common side effects

    • Nausea
    • Drowsiness
    • Weight gain
