Indication

Monotherapy or add-on treatment for epilepsy and bipolar disorder.

Dosage (summary)

Adults: Initial 25 mg daily, increase to 100-200 mg. Children: 0.6 mg/kg/day, max 400 mg.

Onset of Action / Duration

Onset: 1.4 to 4.8 hours, Duration: 25 hours.

Special Populations

  • Elderly
  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Safety not established in pregnancy and lactation.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Valproic acid increases half-life
  • Enzyme inducers decrease half-life

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to lamotrigine
  • Renal and hepatic impairment
  • Patients over 65 years

Common side effects

  • Skin rash
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Headache

Counselling Points

  • Report any rash or flu-like symptoms immediately.
  • Avoid abrupt withdrawal.
  • Monitor weight in children.

Serious warnings

  • Risk of severe skin reactions
  • Monitor for hypersensitivity symptoms
  • Risk of withdrawal seizures
