Indication

Treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and prevention of rebleeding in ulcers.

Dosage (summary)

40 mg IV once daily for erosive reflux; 80 mg bolus for bleeding ulcers.

Special Populations

  • Elderly
  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Caution in pregnancy; not recommended during breastfeeding.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Clopidogrel
  • Warfarin
  • Tacrolimus

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole
  • Concomitant use with nelfinavir and atazanavir

Common side effects

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea

Counselling Points

  • Monitor for signs of hypomagnesaemia
  • Report any severe skin reactions
  • Avoid alcohol and NSAIDs

Serious warnings

  • Risk of gastrointestinal infections
  • Hypomagnesaemia
  • Increased risk of fractures
