    Indication

    Symptomatic treatment of inflammatory conditions where a steroid is indicated.

    Dosage (summary)

    0.6 mg to 4.8 mg daily in divided doses; can be given once daily.

    Special Populations

    • Elderly
    • Diabetic patients
    • Children

    Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

    Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding not established; may affect fetal development.

    Key Drug Interactions

    • Anticholinesterases in myasthenia gravis
    • Hepatic enzyme inducers
    • Hypoglycaemic medicines

    Contraindications

    • Hypersensitivity to betamethasone
    • Systemic fungal infections
    • Peptic ulceration

    Common side effects

    • Increased susceptibility to infections
    • Cushing's syndrome
    • Hypokalaemia

    Counselling Points

    • Take with food to reduce GI upset
    • Avoid exposure to infections
    • Monitor for mood changes

    Serious warnings

    • Risk of myocardial rupture post-MI
    • Adrenal suppression with prolonged use
    • Psychiatric disturbances
