Indication
Treatment of tumour-induced hypercalcaemia and prevention of skeletal complications in breast cancer with bone metastases.
Dosage (summary)
6 mg IV every 3-4 weeks; adjust for renal impairment.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 7 days, Duration: 18-26 days
Special Populations
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
- Elderly
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to lack of clinical experience.
Key Drug Interactions
- Aminoglycosides
- Calcium-containing solutions
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ibandronic acid
- Hypocalcaemia
Common side effects
- Hypocalcaemia
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Asthenia
- Fever
Counselling Points
- Ensure adequate hydration before infusion
- Monitor for signs of jaw osteonecrosis
- Report any thigh or groin pain immediately
Serious warnings
- Anaphylactic reactions
- Osteonecrosis of the jaw
- Atypical femoral fractures
