Key Drug Interactions
- Do not administer with whole blood.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to mannitol
- Pulmonary congestion or oedema
- Intracranial bleeding (except during craniotomy)
- Heart failure
- Metabolic oedema
- Renal failure
Common side effects
- Fluid and electrolyte imbalance
- Circulatory overload
- Acidosis
- Hypersensitivity reactions
Counselling Points
- Use aseptic technique for irrigation.
- Discard unused portion to prevent bacterial growth.
- Warm solution if crystals are present, do not exceed 66 u00b0C.
Serious warnings
- CNS toxicity may occur, especially with renal impairment.
- Risk of increased intracranial pressure.
- Monitor renal function and fluid balance.
